The Zoo Hotel
I arrive at a giant apartment building that I will call the Zoo Hotel. It is a giant complex that is plastered with bright pink toothpaste. I have an appointment Jason who thus far sounds like the most down to earth. I am on the 3rd floor and I look down at the scummy pool—the baby blue water against the pink looks like a bubble gum factory. Knock Knock. Jason answers. He looks weird. He has a long face and large wide eyes. His arms and frame are long, thin and dense. He looks like an Egyptian manimal. A mandrel. A leopard. A wildebeest. I can’t place it. Inside. More of the same. Dirty apartment. Apparently, this isn’t even the apartment for rent, just where he lives. He walks around barefoot. His toenails are obscenely long. His big toe could be a melon ball scooper. He mumbles, “So your apartment is just like this one—but not exactly like this one. The living room is smaller. The kitchen is wider and longer. The bedroom isn’t this shape and there’s no balcony because you are in the opposite corner of the building. The ceilings aren’t as high, but the office is a little bigger.” Huh? This logic makes no sense to me. But I don’t realize it yet. I’m too stunned by the general unseemliness. I am too curious to jet. Every apartment in L.A. so far is carpeted like a hi-fi stereo display case. The inside of my skin feels itchy. There are strange tourist porcelain fixtures all animal related. A smiling frog. A unicorn. A zebra. All porcelain. Two glorified dolphin mall airbrush posters on opposite walls. There are other animal furnishings that slip my mind.

“Look” I say. “I have no idea what the apartment is like. I need to see it. It’s exactly like yours but its not? The walls, halls, are shorter longer taller?” Why am I saying any of this? I have no intention of taking it. He comes outside and points to this dingy corner door on the second floor. How did I even find this place? West Side rentals? Its $950.00. Yuck. He begins describing the apartment again. “ The walls, the halls are…” And then I see his shirt. It’s a shirt of a jungle. There are Toucan’s and lions, thick long leaves and vines. It’s a shirt for a zoo—the type has faded. And his nose hairs are sticking out. He turns to point and his ear hairs are flaring out. Someone pasted Chia seeds on the inside of Jason’s head. Every time I go apartment hunting, I’m amazed at how people live. Right then I swear to myself that when I get my place I will compulsively clean my toilet bowl in apron. He is still babbling, “the walls, the halls, the doors, the drawers” I’m lost in the shirt. This place is a pink zoo and Jason is the zookeeper.
